March 9 & 10 - Painting Old Buildings

Updated: Jul 15, 2022

With BARBARA BRENNAN - March 9th and 10th, 2019 9:30am - 4pm $175

Old houses and barns make great subjects for painting and drawing, but they can be so intimidating! How do you get the structure to recede in space and look natural? This 2-day workshop will introduce the basics of 1- and 2-point perspective and help you get all those parts lined up right. We’ll start out drawing, then transfer to board or canvas with pencil and a 2-toned wash (grisaille), and finish off with color.

Beginners with no experience are welcome. Bring a photograph (your own or from a book) and your favorite medium: oil, pastel, watercolor, pencil, or ink. Also bring canvas or board to paint on and a portable easel if you have one, or let us know if you need a loaner. The teacher will provide the other tools demonstrated in the class: T-squares, triangles, and proportion wheels.

Trained as a museum exhibition and theater set designer, Barbara combines knowledge of architecture with principles of art and design. She will demonstrate the tools of those trades as well as methods for painting weathered wood and rusted metal in oil or pastel.

The cost for the 2-day workshop is $175 (lunch is on your own), and it will be held at the Artists’ Alliance at Jarrett Thor gallery, 100 Taylor St. #101, Colonial Beach, VA 22443. Register by completing the form below and mailing a $50 deposit to the gallery. For information call 804-224-7200 or Connie Canby, Workshop Coordinator, 540-454-0524
